Difference between Advanced Ceramics and Traditional Ceramics

1. For material, traditional ceramics are mainly made of clay. Comparing with that, advanced ceramics are composited by oxides, nitrides, silicides, borides, carbides and so on, moreover, the chemical composition, crystal structure and grain size can be controlled precisely.

2. For composition, traditional ceramics are determined by compostion of the clay which is used, so ceramics from different orgins and ceramic kilns are diverse in their texture. In contrast, advanced ceramics are manually-made pure compounds, so the quality are decided by the purity of material and  producing process, not by the orgins.

3. For producing process, the forming methods of advanced ceramics are mostly by advanced methods lik dry pressing, isostatic pressing, injection molding and vapor deposition etc, which can acquire uniform density distribution and relatively accurate green body size, the density is also developed. On the other hand, the sintering methods of advanced ceramics have made big breakthrough than traditional ceramics which are mainly depend on ceramic kilns. They are using advanced methods like vacuum sintering, protection amosphere sintering, hot pressed sintering, high temperature isostatic pressing, reaction sintering, self-propagating high temperature sintering etc.

4. For performance, advance ceramics have many particular properties, such as high strength, high hardness, corrosion resistance, electric conductivity, electric insulation and other properties on magnestic, electric, optical, acoustic, bioengineering, these particular properties enable advanced ceramics have widely application in the fields of high temperature, machinery, electronic, aerospace, medical engineering etc.

After all, the advantage of advanced ceramics comparing with traditional ceramics is that advanced ceramics can perform strict control on raw material preparation and follow-up producing process, this makes it possible to produce ceramics with different properties which are needed in practice.
